Alaska Baptist Family Services – Specialized Treatment, Anchorage

ABFS maintains 16 beds in two residential cottages for adolescent and preteen ( 9-18 years old) boys who need residential care with 24-hour behavior rehabilitation services. Referrals for services are made through the Office of Children’s Services, Division of Juvenile Justice, and Psychiatric Hospitals and through parental placements.

Evidenced Based Program
Recognized by The National Child Traumatic Stress Network as a promising practice, ABFS’ treatment program is based on the Attachment, Self-Regulation and Competency (ARC) framework of clinical services. ABFS provides individual, family and group therapy and provides each client access to an on-site psychiatric nurse practitioner who, under the supervision of a licensed psychiatrist, oversees medication management and provides primary health care.

Program Goals

  • Help children/youth to function with decreasing formal supports ensuring a timely and successful transition into a less restrictive placement setting.
  • Help children/youth progress towards meeting the level of skills and competencies that are developmentally appropriate.
  • Help children/youth progress towards meeting developmentally appropriate educational and/or vocational goals.
  • Reduce the risk of harm to the child/youth and others as a result of maladaptive behaviors.

Measurement of Success
ABFS monitors our success at supporting children to meet these goals through utilization of the Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scale (CAFAS). This scale is used to assess the degree of impairment in our clients before intake, during treatment and after discharge. Levels of functioning in school/work, home, community, behavior towards others, mood/emotions, self-harm behaviors, substance use, and thinking are rated on a scale and the scores from all the areas are then combined for a total score of functioning.
