Alaska BRFSS Health Profiles: Themes and Indicators

Contents

In this sixth data release there are 383 health indicators or diseases organized into 50 themes. Some indicators have multiple response categories bringing the total number of variables up to 640 and the results for each are displayed as Alaska Total as well as Alaska Native and white racial categories. Not all variables are available for each geographic system due to the BRFSS requirement of requiring at least 50 respondents in a region before making results publically available. It is often necessary to aggregate multiple years of data to reach the 50-respondent threshold. Data are denoted as DSU, shorthand for Data Statistical Unreliable, when information has to be suppressed.

Drop-down menus allow selection of indicators and time periods for the three InstantAtlas graphic templates of Single Map, Double Map, and Area Profile. To condense the list of variable selection options for the text-based HTML Profiles, all indicators are displayed for all regions and time periods within a selected theme. The following table provides a comprehensive list of possible indicators within a theme. Only the themes available for each geographic system are displayed on the selection pages for the HTML Profiles. Selecting a geographic region on the HTML Profile pages will result in information for all variables and time periods for the area.
